"You're not a slut, you're a feminist"

Posted on February 22 2018

They say lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice, but with Jessica Sorkin it’s struck twice af and struck some more. She’s beautiful, brilliant, chill, sexy, and low key built one of funniest and fastest growing meme accounts on the gram (@TheHandyJ).

Jessica’s been on ArsenicTV a few times by now, so she’s part of the Arsenic movement and last week on V-Day we chopped it up with her about what she believes in. She told us in Miami Beach she used to like to wear low cut shirts, and someone called her a slut. Her mom told her, “You eat what you want, do want you want, fuck who you want. You’re not a slut. You’re a feminist.” And that set the tone for a lot of the message Jessica puts out to the world.

Jessica told us, “there needs to be a new movement. Women are powerful. And I love to see them own that.” We asked her what the core tenets of that movement would be, and she said: “In Miami I’d sometimes go topless at the beach. It was before Instagram, I didn’t do it for attention and I didn’t do it because of the beauty of female form. I went topless because I prefer it. Why would I want tan lines? I don’t want to wear a top, so I’m not going to. I don’t give a fuck what people think."

That’s the core of her philosophy. Own who you are and do what you want - just do no harm. “Arsenic is so successful, because it’s a movement about girls doing what they want… and as a society we are starting to own who we are, and even taking pride in it,” she said.

We asked her about brains vs. beauty and she quotes her own meme: “People who say brains are the new tits, obviously haven’t seen my tits!” -- but she says this sarcastically knowing full well her intelligence is even more powerful and has propelled her to 570,000 followers and growing.

In closing she said, “I’d love to see society become less self involved, so we can have some more collective progress. We need to start being more open and accepting.” We asked her anything else she wants to say? “Never look down on someone. Unless they’re giving you head.”
